Would you go 37 years without a paycheck?

first_img 6SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr by: Shazia ManusI was blown away (and that’s an understatement) by the presentation of Clarence Hall Jr.’s story and tribute video shared during the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) Dinner in Washington, D.C. I was truly inspired by how one person could make such a profound impact on so many.A passionate champion of the credit union movement, Mr. Hall received the 2015 Herb Wegner Lifetime Achievement Award, the credit union movement’s highest national honor celebrating individuals and programs that put belief into action. I had the distinct honor of meeting Mr. Hall and can say it was one of the highlights of my GAC experience.Mr. Hall is chair of the board and president/CEO of the $1.2 million Issaquena County Federal Credit Union in Mayersville, Miss. He founded the credit union in 1969, following a contentious battle with the State of Mississippi, which had denied African Americans the right to obtain charters and set up not-for-profit organizations. For the first 37 of his 45 years serving the credit union in this capacity, he did so without pay. Clearly, his motivation behind the credit union was to provide a better quality of life for his impoverished community. continue reading »last_img read more

AFC must make ‘hard decisions’, supports firing of workers – Ramjattan

first_img– says AFC must make ‘hard decisions’, supports firing of workers– admits Government cannot fix sectorThe passivity of the Alliance For Change (AFC) in the face of the move to close sugar estates and issue redundancy letters to workers was vigorously defended by that party’s co-founder, Khemraj Ramjattan, who has insisted that Guyana’s sugar sector has a terminal illness that the Government cannot cure.He made this statement during his opening contribution to the 2018 budget debates in the National Assembly on Thursday.Despite a Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into the sugar industry having recommended that no estates be closed, Ramjattan invoked that very CoI toParty’s co-founder Khemraj Ramjattansupport his contention.“This party must make hard decisions in relation to sugar. And so it is important that when you do the analysis, as the Commission of Inquiry had done — when you did the consultation with NAACIE and GAWU, and when you have all the facts; like a good judge you, have to make a decision as to where it will go from there,” Ramjattan said.“And we have made the decision that we are going to ensure that we lighten the transition, knowing that we cannot continue to pour money into that industry. It is important that all of them will be better for it in the long term. It is a terminal illness, in relation to sugar today; it is not (attracting) the price it used to have internationally. If you win the elections in 2020, you can bring back sugar. And you want bet me you can’t bring it back?” In May 2017, Government announced plans to close the Enmore and Rose Hall sugar estates, sell the Skeldon Sugar Factory, reduce the annual production of sugar, and take on the responsibility of managing the drainage and irrigation services offered by GuySuCo.Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, had said at a post-Cabinet press briefing that closure of the sugar estates would be pushed back to 2018. Harmon had said that closure of the Rose Hall Estate in East Canje, Berbice would occur sometime next year. With regard to the Skeldon and Enmore estates, he had said that the Special Purpose Unit (SPU) would have to conduct evaluations, surveys and inventory assessments before any steps are taken to actually sell those estates.Recently, the minister had also stated that before GuySuCo had moved to issue redundancy letters to the affected sugar workers, such a major decision should have at least been discussed with the other Cabinet members, so as to plan accordingly. He said he believes that at least some kind of notification ought to have been given to the workers who are being made redundant. It was recently reported that the Private Sector Commission (PSC) has submitted a proposal for the acquisition of the East Coast Demerara Estate.A statement from Head of the SPU, Colvin Heath-London, last month detailed that an international accounting firm would be recruited to evaluate GuySuCo’s assets for privatisation and divestment.Last month, GuySuCo announced plans to retrench 2500 workers by the end of this year. GAWU says the downsizing and subsequent closure of sugar estates would lead to the loss of more than 15,000 jobs, and the potential threat of poverty for between 50,000 and 100,000 people.AFC’s relevanceRamjattan was also subjected to resounding heckles from the parliamentary Opposition regarding the AFC’s relevance as a coalition partner. This is after months of being sidelined from major decisions by APNU, but the minister was adamant that the AFC still has a purpose in the coalition party.“I want to say that our country took a turn for the better in 2015 because of certain decisions made by (us). We started talks with the APNU. And today we are here. Your remarks that we are being chewed up is not true,” Ramjattan stated. In an effort to bolster the AFC’s relevance, Ramjattan pointed to Minister of Public Infrastructure, former AFC General Secretary David Patterson. He also referred to Natural Resources Minister Raphael Trotman and Public Telecommunications Minister Cathy Hughes.Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, who was consistently heckled and referred to as a “rubber stamp” by Opposition members, was also held up by Ramjattan as an example of the AFC’s vibrancy and involvement in Government.“We are doing (things) with our coalition partner that will (benefit) Guyana. Greater things will come with the oil sector. And so I wish to make that point.”Over the past months since the coalition Government has been in power, the AFC has been repeatedly sidelined by the APNU. The most recent incident was the sidelining of the AFC nominee for the post of Commissioner on the Guyana Elections Commission in favour of a WPA member.last_img read more

Funding injection for Team South Africa from NLC

first_imgAhead of the Olympic Games in Brazil in August, the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) has partnered with the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) to fund athletes for the tournament in Rio and beyond.“The sponsorship commitment, valued at R70-million, will provide a much-need injection into addressing athletes’ requirements in the lead up to the Rio Olympics,” Sascoc said.Thank you @SA_NLC!! pic.twitter.com/GLXy7adJc0— TeamSouthAfrica (@teamsa16) June 29, 2016The money will be used to transport Team SA to Brazil for the Olympics, Paralympic Games and the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games.Chairperson of the NLC Prof Ntshengedzeni Nevhutanda described the alliance as historical because the commission had “seen our athletes perform at the Olympics since South Africa was re-admitted into the global sports organisation”.“We have witnessed the outstanding achievements of our sportsmen and women who have, on numerous occasions, brought us glory. The NLC is confident that our on-going partnership with Sascoc will bring continuous development and further success for our athletes.”Sascoc’s president, Gideon Sam, thanked the NLC and voiced appreciation of the public’s support through buying lottery tickets.“We can assure the NLC that their support and continued association with Sascoc has enabled our athletes to compete at the highest levels of international sports,” Sam said. The sponsorship was a tremendous boost for Team SA, said Sascoc chief executive Tubby Reddy, who assured the nation the athletes would leave South Africa feeling proud.Speaking at Sascoc’s first general council meeting earlier this year, Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula affirmed the government’s support of the country’s athletes. “Specific needs for coaches of medal contenders will be identified as the focus in the preparations is narrowed,” he said.“Extra technical sport support in terms of strategic approach and financial support to the coaches will then be provided in order to increase the possibilities and opportunities to realise and secure medals for our athletes.” CAA African Senior ChampionshipsAt the recent CAA African Senior Championships hosted in Durban, South Africa topped the medals tally with 33, which bode well for the country’s Olympic hopes.UPDATED: Final Medal Table at the 20th CAA African Senior Athletics Championshipsin ??#Durban2016 #AfricanChamps pic.twitter.com/8PMRnwcAhp— Athletics Africa (@athleticsafrica) June 27, 2016The 96-member team came out with 16 gold, nine silver and eight bronze medals by the end of tournament on 26 June 2016. Toni & Guy TGDR5362UK1 Daily Conditioning Hair Dryer : Great buy. Light-weight

first_img Toni & guy daily conditioning hairdryer. Very pleased with hairdryer, prompt delivery. Hairdryer is much lighter than my previous dryer and i like that. I am really pleased that i opted for this cheaper hairdryer. I spent hours looking at different hairdryers with price ranges up to £120. I am really pleased that i opted for this cheaper hairdryer. I usually had to dry my hair and then straighten with my ghds. Now it’s rare i use my ghds. Everything was a stated in the advertisement. Would recommend fro further purchases. Really pleased dried my hair fast and loved the cool shot. It’s light and my hair felt really nice. Light-weight, like it says, the ionic conditioning is good too, the nozzle works to allow me to direct the air stream into the under-layers of my hair, so i don’t feel i need to dry my hair upside-down, which is nice. I usually use the mid-temperature and the fast air speed settings, my hair is pretty long and of medium thickness and with very fine (frizz-inclined) strands and this drier dries it in less than 5 minutes (after moderate towelling), leaving it in good nick, no frizz, light and not feeling dried-out. Good quality , great price , great service and delivery , light weight , easy to use dries hair fast , recommend to anyone who wants a hair dryer for their own use. Very impressed with this hair dryer for the money. It has a long lead, it light weight and feels/sounds like a more expensive product. Perfect item long lead comes in handy love the heat ranges and speed setting. Gives good results on my hair which is difficult at the best of times. This was so cheap i cannot believe it’s real toni. Cool conditions set back harvest Between the Rows

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest I still believe additional rain will benefit the soybean crop. The same holds true for the corn crop. We are,Glen Newcomerhowever, getting exceptionally dry. We had hit and miss rains last week but not enough to have an impact or make much of a yield difference. Lack of rain and an early frost are our two greatest concerns at this time. Most of the corn is still not black layered or fully matured. We need at least 100 growing degree units on the April-planted corn and probably an additional 300 or 350 growing degree units for the replant corn that was planted in early June. We absolutely do not want to have any type of frost on any of our crops for quite some time. Based on recent weather, we are only accumulating 10 to 15 growing degree units per day. At that rate we need several weeks of above normal temperatures before we can handle a frost in this part of the state. We have noticed some premature death in corn as a result of the dry weather, which could create standability or stalk issues in this crop. We’ll probably be shelling corn before we cut soybeans because of those issues. As a result of multiple stresses on this crop, I believe the overall corn plant health has been compromised. We have not found high populations of soybean aphids that other areas have experienced. Soybean leaf diseases are minimal. Some farmers are seeing sudden death syndrome and white mold in their soybeans. Looking forward, soybeans are just totally dependent on the amount of rain we receive between now and full maturity. With the cooler temperatures, it has definitely slowed down the progression of harvest. I do not anticipate harvesting any soybeans in September this year. We may shell some corn before we start on soybeans. Some of the initial tonnage reports from silage being made may indicate that the corn crop is better than we anticipate. Let’s hope so. This year all crops are going to be quite variable and unpredictable in yield. For the rest of this week’s reports, click here.last_img read more

Rick Pitino Says John Calipari Is His National Coach Of The Year

first_imgHead coach John Calipari of the Kentucky Wildcats acknowledges the fans during practice for the NCAA Men's Final Four.INDIANAPOLIS, IN – APRIL 03: Head coach John Calipari of the Kentucky Wildcats acknowledges the fans during practice for the NCAA Men’s Final Four at Lucas Oil Stadium on April 3, 2015 in Indianapolis, Indiana. (Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty Images) Twitter/CalipariTwitter/CalipariThe U.S. Basketball Writers Association recently voted Virginia’s Tony Bennett its Henry Iba Award Winner as the national Coach of the Year. According to the Associated Press, Louisville head coach Rick Pitino was asked on Tuesday about Bennett taking home the honor, and his response is one that probably caused a ripple across the Bluegrass State. “I think John Calipari has done a brilliant job, so I’d put him at the top” of the list of candidates.Pitino added, “When you’re undefeated and nobody’s beaten you, it’s clear cut who the coach of the year is right now.”Sure, Calipari is the skipper of the undefeated and top-ranked team in the nation, but that team is Kentucky, Pitino’s former employer and Louisville’s biggest rival, so this response is somewhat noteworthy. Still, Calipari as coach of the year isn’t exactly an outside-the-box thought from anyone. The most surprising thing, given Pitino and Calipari’s respective resumes, is that neither of them has ever won the USBWA Coach of the Year award.last_img read more
