Man United line-up v Newcastle: Summer signing finally ready to start?

first_imgManchester United have made a steady, if unspectacular, start to the season and will want to continue racking up the wins against Newcastle United on Saturday. Two wins in the Premier League without conceding a goal, combined with a 3-1 win against Club Brugge in the Champions League, have given United a perfect opening record.Despite the wins, there have been questions about the performances so far with the Red Devils yet to put in a dominant showing. There will also be increased scrutiny on Louis van Gaal’s selections with the failure to capture some big signings in the last week. With an away tie against Brugge coming up, Van Gaal may look to ring the changes against the Magpies.Wayne Rooney’s form has come in for criticism, but with a lack of back-up option,s will the England striker continue to lead the line?talkSPORT examines van Gaal’s options and looks at who might start…Goalkeeper: You’d have had long odds on Sergio Romero being United’s first choice goalkeeper a couple of months ago, but the Argentine has impressed since joining on a free transfer. Yet to concede a Premier League goal, his place in the starting line-up is assured.Defence: United’s defence is yet to breached by the opposition this season, having only conceded from a Michael Carrick own goal.Phil Jones is out with illness and Marcos Rojo is working his way back to full fitness, so expect Daley Blind to keep his place in central defence alongside the imperious Chris Smalling.Midfield: Missing out on Pedro has placed greater scrutiny on United’s stable of attacking midfielders but with Memphis Depay and Adnan Januzaj proving to be match winners in the last two outings, as well as Juan Mata’s undoubted class and Ander Herrera in reserve, the Red Devils may feel they didn’t need the Spaniard.Morgan Schneiderlin has impressed in the centre of the park but his midfield partner Carrick was hauled off at half-time on Tuesday. Bastian Schweinsteiger may get the nod against Newcastle having built up his fitness in recent games.Attack: Wayne Rooney’s start to life as United’s main striker hasn’t been a roaring success so far, but with Javier Hernandez and James Wilson providing the only competition you would imagine he will start against the Magpies.Marouane Fellaini came off the bench and made an immediate impact against Club Brugge, grabbing the decisive third goal, but Van Gaal will keep the giant Belgian as a plan B option from the bench. 1 Man United players last_img read more
