The monumental metal sheet factory on the former shipyard in the heart of Vlissingen, and the adjacent site, have been transformed into a residential care centre. The residential centre has 55 apartments for somatic care, 6 group accommodation units for psychogeriatric residents and 54 care and/or assisted-living apartments. In addition, the ground floor accommodates a public functions restaurant, a training and education room, studios, a hairdresser, a shop, a physiotherapy room, a theatre auditorium and a parking garage.Save this picture!Courtesy of Atelier PRO architectsOpen the existing building The closed facade of the historical building has been opened and partly equipped with glass. The large, heavy doors have been opened and a transparent ‘box’ was added on the ground floor. There are now three storeys with living space. This group accommodation has been given a layout as close as possible to a ‘normal’ home environment: only after passing through the living room does one enter the sleeping area. All apartments are connected internally with the service functions.Save this picture!Courtesy of Atelier PRO architectsInteriorAtelier PRO has also shaped the interior. The basic principle here was to create a homely and authentic atmosphere and to avoid an institutional character. The industrial shipyard past has been unmistakeably retained in the interior, by leaving visible heavy, originally metal structures.Save this picture!© Ronald TillemanFunctional solutions The apartments are generously proportioned and the facilities ensuring good care have been incorporated very unobtrusively. Patient hoists for use by staff are hidden away in each room and, in the event of a malfunction, maintenance staff do not need to disturb the privacy of the residents. The technical installations are placed inconspicuously behind the panelling in the corridor.Save this picture!© Ronald TillemanDesign for dementiaMuch effort was done to create a home for the disoriented, enabling them to wander around safely in a protected indoor garden and using special materials to stimulate the senses. The apartment layout for residents with dementia intentionally encourages them to leave their homes and to return again safely.Save this picture!© Ronald TillemanFuture-proofThe construction and infrastructure are designed in such a way that the care service functions can be adapted easily in the future. These are homes that can change with the phases of life and that wait for future generations.Save this picture!© Petra AppelhofSocial and spatial landmarkIn the former shipyard area a lively social and spatial landmark has arisen. Despite being located in an area suffering from population decrease, the client, WVO Zorg care service provider, made an effort to develop an environment that appeals to the public by making an attractive place to visit, thus restoring urban livelihood.Project gallerySee allShow lessQuincho los Gauchos / Francisco Cadau Oficina de ArquitecturaSelected ProjectsODA Tapped to Expand Rotterdam’s Historic Post OfficeArchitecture NewsProject locationAddress:Vlissingen, The NetherlandsLocation to be used only as a reference. There is no way that any ordinary person might stumble upon this magnificent and sanctified piece of ground and think that it serves as the training ground for what might be accurately defined as; “the most violent team sport” in the world. The game of professional football can be described as surreal and “other-worldly.” Football is spiritual, yet carnal. Football is deep, yet shallow, happy and sad, with Mt. Everest type highs and Hades type lows. There are many more contradictions that define yet confuse what this gladiator like game means to many, many people. One of the elements that immortalize the game just well may be one of the men who did not play during the evolution of football from the industrial to the electronic revolution. One of the timeless and legendary “stone masons” who was and is invaluable to the legacy of the Steelers is Mr. William “Bill” Nunn Jr. The Rooney family is credited and rightly so with having the patience to gut it out with what was formerly viewed as one of the most futile and incompetent franchises in the history of professional sports. Former Steelers Head Coach Charles Henry “Chuck” Noll is considered the architect of the Steelers “mansion” of excellence” but it was Bill Nunn Jr. who provided the building blocks for the Steelers Nation to build the record of excellence on which the team can proudly stand for eternity.I have written about Mr. Nunn in the past and most of you that know me understand that it has been my opinion for over four decades that if a football “God” exists on this earth then he must be incarnated in the person of Bill Nunn Jr. When I reflect on my experience at the Courier it has been like all of life’s experiences can be filled with moments of angst and glory. Please pardon my “gushiness” but for me to personally know Bill Nunn Jr., well just put it like this; for an African-American football scribe it is unlike any experience I have had in over three decades as a sports journalist. An individual can almost learn as much about professional football in two hours sitting under the tutelage of Bill Nunn Jr. than taking a two year course at any accredited university. In March, 2012, Nunn told Chuck Finder of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that, “I retired in 1987. I think Dan [Rooney], the only reason he keeps me around—I do some things—is because I’m the only one here older than him. Every year I tell him, ‘I’m going to quit coming in.’ And he says, ‘Nah, you’re not.’”In February, 2010, he was inducted into the Black College Hall of Fame. He sat down with Steelers writer Bob Labriola and had this to say about the New Pittsburgh Courier. “The Courier was a crusading paper,” said Nunn. “We fought against what we called ‘injustices,’ and not only in sports, but also in the workplace, in the educational system and so on. As a result, I was just proud I was a part of that newspaper. What happened with the Courier, though, was that because we were a crusading newspaper, it affected us with advertising. We could get the beer advertisements and things like that, but the big department stores and some of the big companies wouldn’t advertise because we were fighting against job discrimination, and many of those things were happening at some of those places.”He went on to say that, “My feeling is that so much of what I did to be a part of this (the Black College Hall of Fame) was done when I was with the newspaper (The Pittsburgh Courier),” said Nunn.“Getting to the Steelers, of course, also was due to the newspaper. Having dealt with Black colleges for most of my newspaper life, I feel good about that. I picked the Black College All-America football team starting in 1950, and the last one I took part in was in 1974 when I was a scout here and we drafted John Stallworth. So as a result, I felt very good about being a part of that.”There are many heroes that are woven into the eternal fabric of the New Pittsburgh Courier. Malvin “Mal” Goode, Hazel Garland, Charles “Teenie” Harris, Wendell Smith and Eddie Jeffries have all left an indelible mark upon the world of journalism but Bill Nunn Jr. crossed the chasm of the “unknown” and navigated the treacherous waters of the sacred “man world” of professional football that possibly possesses that highest concentrated level of testosterone in the universe. We often hear of Jackie Robinson shattering the so-called color barrier in baseball. Willie Thrower was the first African American player to appear in a professional game at the quarterback position in the National Football League. I could go on and on. However, Bill Nunn Jr. actually had an impact far beyond the playing field. His eyes and ears would be the propellants that would launch a franchise tagged with incompetence and failure up into the stratosphere of greatness. The Holy Scriptures explain to us that there is a time and season for everything. Bill Nunn Jr. has, is and will always be a man for “all” seasons.(Aubrey Bruce can be reached at: [email protected] or 412-583-6741.) Last Friday night after the Steelers completed their first public scrimmage at Latrobe Area High School, I walked around the grounds of St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA which serves as the training camp home of the Pittsburgh Steelers. During that little stroll something occurred to me. It was eerily quiet on this pristine campus dedicated to Saint Vincent. To all untrained observers this might even be a place that the Gods might take a wink or two or even hit the snooze button.
A recent decision by Indonesia’s environment ministry to abruptly cut ties with WWF Indonesia has thrown a crucial effort to conserve Sumatran rhinos into limbo.WWF Indonesia had been deeply involved in an initiative to start a captive-breeding program for the species in Indonesian Borneo.Experts agree that captive-breeding of the species is the best way to boost a birth rate that has dropped below natural replacement levels, and the capture of wild rhinos from Borneo was seen as key to boosting the available genetic pool. It’s not clear how the program will now proceed, but WWF Indonesia says it remains open to supporting the government on the conservation cause. JAKARTA — The acrimonious end to a partnership between WWF and Indonesia’s environment ministry threatens to derail a crucial program to breed Sumatran rhinos in captivity, widely seen as the only viable way to save the species from extinction, in eastern Borneo.Conservationists had been scheduled to capture a wild Sumatran rhino (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) from East Kalimantan, a province in Indonesian Borneo, last November and deliver it to a sanctuary staffed by experts from WWF Indonesia. But that plan was scrapped after the environment ministry effectively cut ties with the conservation NGO in October. The split was formally announced in January this year.WWF Indonesia had been involved in the capture of two wild rhinos in 2016 and 2018 in the province. The first one, a female named Najaq, died from injuries sustained during her capture. The second rhino, Pahu, also a female, was successfully relocated to the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary (SRS) in the Kelian protected forest in East Kalimantan. WWF Indonesia staff have been heavily involved in attending to Pahu since her rescue.Suhandri, a director at the wildlife group, told Mongabay that WWF Indonesia decided to delay carrying out the plan after receiving letters from the environment ministry on Oct. 7 announcing the ministry’s unilateral termination of their memorandum of understanding.“We knew the routes [the rhino] would frequently pass,” Suhandri said in Jakarta on Jan. 28. “We had picked the locations for the pit traps.”The partnership had been scheduled to end in 2023, but the ministry cited alleged violations of the agreement by WWF Indonesia as justification for the early termination.Pahu, a female Sumatran rhino, was captured from the wild in East Kalimantan province, in Indonesian Borneo, in an effort to start a captive-breeding population to stave off the species’ extinction. Image courtesy of Sugeng Hendratmo/Sumatran Rhino Rescue. The ministry’s decision affects 30 out of 130 projects that WWF Indonesia administers across the country, one of them being the rhino conservation program in East Kalimantan.Conservation groups and government officials agree that bringing isolated, wild rhinos into captivity is critical for ensuring the survival of this critically endangered species. Most of the remaining wild Sumatran rhinos live in fragmented groups too small to reproduce naturally at sustainable rates, leading to fears the species will decline into extinction without human intervention.Capturing a rhino in Indonesian Borneo is seen as particularly critical to the conservation cause. The Sumatran and Bornean populations of the species have been separated for thousands of years and have grown genetically distinct during that time. Breeding between the two populations will therefore give a much-needed genetic diversity boost to the captive-breeding program, which has so far relied only on rhinos from the Sumatran population. While Malaysian Borneo no longer has any rhinos in the wild or in captivity, there is at least one, Pahu, on the Indonesian part of the island, and likely a second that WWF Indonesia had targeted for capture last year. (Indonesia’s other SRS, at Way Kambas National Park in Sumatra, has seven rhinos, two of which were born there under the captive-breeding program.)Suhandri said he couldn’t confirm the sex of the wild rhino targeted for capture, but a male rhino would mean a potential mate for Pahu.In 2013, WWF Indonesia confirmed a wild population of the Sumatran rhinos in East Kalimantan that was thought to have vanished. Since then, it has worked with the government and other conservation groups — Aliansi Lestari Rimba Terpadu (ALeRT) and Komunitas Pecinta Alam Damai (KOMPAD) — on conserving the species there.WWF Indonesia has been involved in field surveys to track wild rhinos, beefing up protection of their habitats, setting up the high-security sanctuary at Kelian for the captive-breeding program, and locating and capturing rhinos from the wild. Suhandri said WWF Indonesia had spent more than $1 million on the collaborative rhino conservation program in East Kalimantan.Indra Eksploitasia, the director of biodiversity conservation director at the environment ministry, told Mongabay that her office would take over the program.Sunandar Trigunajasa Nurochmadi, the head of the East Kalimantan government’s conservation agency, declined to comment to Mongabay on WWF Indonesia’s exit from the rhino program. However, he said his office was committed to finding rhinos in the wild there and trapping them for the breeding program. He added that they had spotted three wild rhinos in the province.Suhandri said his team would meet with the provincial conservation agency and other groups to find ways in which WWF Indonesia’s rhino experts could continue to be involved in the program.“To this day our keepers and vets are still taking care of Pahu. This is such a specific task, you can’t just swap it out,” he said.Pahu was captured in 2018, two years after another female rhino was captured. The earlier capture turned tragic when the rhino, Najaq, died from injuries sustained during the capture. Image by Ridho Hafizh Zainur Ridha/WWF Indonesia.News of the end of the partnership between WWF Indonesia and the environment ministry came as a surprise to other conservation groups, according to Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, the head of WWF Indonesia’s steering committee.“Everyone was asking us ‘What’s going on?’” Kuntoro said. “We’re shattered because we are a reputable organization.”WWF is a co-founder of the Sumatran Rhino Rescue global initiative established in September 2018 by the Indonesian government, the National Geographic Society, Global Wildlife Conservation, the International Rhino Foundation, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature.“WWF-Indonesia has played a critical role in supporting on-the-ground work to save the Sumatran rhino,” Jon Paul Rodriguez, chair of the IUCN Species Survival Commission, wrote in an email to Mongabay.Rodriguez said the Sumatran Rhino Rescue program would continue to support efforts to save the species and allocate resources accordingly in light of the new development. He said some of the initiative’s key objectives this year include conducting search-and-rescue operations to capture isolated rhinos from the wild, building new facilities to bolster capacity to care for and breed rhinos, and coordinating with other partners across Indonesia to collaborate on a single, countrywide breeding program.“We defer to the Government of Indonesia and WWF-Indonesia to determine the next steps for their relationship,” Rodriguez added.Following the death of Malaysia’s last Sumatran rhino last November, Indonesia is now the last refuge for the global population of the species. There are fewer than 80 individuals believed to be left in Sumatra and Indonesian Borneo. Habitat loss and poaching had depleted the population that once roamed as far as mainland Southeast Asia, but experts now say the low birthrate is the main threat to the species. Breeding efforts in captivity have been hailed as the priority for ensuring the rhinos’ survival.Lukas Adhyakso, WWF Indonesia’s acting CEO, said that while the organization respects the ministry’s decision to cut ties, the focus of all parties should be on ensuring the continued protection and care of the rhinos, whether inside or outside the sanctuary in East Kalimantan.“We must not let this animal perish,” he said. “We have the expertise. Others may have it, too, but we’re the ones that have been involved [in the rhino program] for so long.“If the government wants us, we’re ready to support them,” Lukas added.Pahu is today the sole Sumatran rhino from the Bornean population being held in captivity. Good effort trying to be objective in this article. I would like to give a constructive feedback which could help in clearing things up.1. It is mentioned that planting trees in village common lands will have negative affects socially and ecologically. There is no need to even have to agree or disagree with it, because, you also mentioned the fact that Cauvery Calling aims to plant trees only in the private lands of the farmers. So, plantation in the common lands doesn’t come into the picture.2.I don’t see that the ecologists are totally against this project, but just they they have some concerns, mainly in terms of what species of trees will be planted. And because there was no direct communication between the ecologists and Isha Foundation, it was not possible for them to address the concerns. As you seem to have spoken with an Isha spokesperson, if you could connect the concerned parties, it would be great, because I see that the ecologists are genuinely interested in making sure things are done the right way.May we all come together and make things happen.Rare Amazon bush dogs caught on camera in BoliviaCarrot1 Feba very good iniciative to be fallowed by the ranchers all overSponsored
HALF TIME in Ballybofey: DONEGAL 0-04, DOWN 0-05.THE MOURNEMEN lead at the break at MacCumhaill Park in this Division One clash, ahead by a point.Donegal stuttered at the start, with Murphy missing a free before pointing a second opportunity a minute later. Ross Wherrity added a brilliant second after some good work from Murphy and Mark McHugh, whose brother Ryan made his league debut tonight. Then Down came back and pushed ahead, scoring five points as the clock ticked down with goalie Kevin McKernan pointing from a free before then making a great save for Down.A Murphy point from a free reduced the deficit to leave Donegal a point behind at the break.Just two points from play and it hasn’t been a great spectacle; Donegal need to shake off the cobwebs in the second half. Apple also released a new version of the iPhone this year, along with improvements to its iPhone OS such as multi-tasking. This year Google made great strides in the all-important mobile market, with Android making up ground on iPhone. It continued to dominate search, despite a big marketing push from Microsoft’s Bing. Google showed that it can still innovate in search, with enhancements such as Instant Search. It also made progress in key markets such as enterprise (with Google Apps) and Internet TV (with Google TV). Things didn’t go all Google’s way this year, however. Its innovative Wave product was farmed out as an open source project, the launch of a social media tracking service called Google Buzz was a flub, and Google had many critics in the privacy debate (for Google Street View in particular). Overall though, it was a strong year for Google – albeit with some speed wobbles.Honorable MentionsReadWriteWeb’s 2010 In Review:Top 10 Semantic Web Products of 2010Top 10 RSS and Syndication Technologies of 2010Best BigCo of 2010: FacebookTop Trends of 2010: App StoresMost Promising Company For 2011: SimpleGeoTop Trends of 2010: Internet TVTop 10 Startups of 2010Top Trends of 2010: PrivacySeveral big Internet companies had solid years and successful products in certain categories.
